“Nothing tastes as good as looking good feels.” Anthony Robbins
Like a fish snagged with a Treble Hook I am not letting any of off the line on this one. I will never forget ex-great 49ers, Coach Bill Walsh commenting to news reporters about why he benched one of his starting offensive linemen for being too fat and slow, “Instead of finishing his plate, he needs to finish his blocks!”
If you are a family man in America the chance is that you are statistically fat and getting fatter. I have stayed true as a poster child to the statistic. I read years ago that the average American will gain two pounds a year after age 30, and since graduating from high school at 225 pounds and now standing on the scale at 250 plus I could be the poster boy for this statistic (For my height I am 60 pound over weight according to most charts) . Our extreme wealth is killing us with obesity and all of its ailments such as Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, lethargy, and an overall loss of being fully alive in Christ. Food companies put hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup into their foods as preservatives but these same ingredients are addictive agents of death, doom and obesity.
Every time I walk around town, hike in the mountains or ride a bike it is like carrying a 40 pound pack around my gluteus maximums or rear end!
We tend to frown on “those people” in church with drug, alcohol and sex addictions, but ignore the blatantly obvious food addicts that steal family resources, through extreme food consumption, cost of eating fast food and medical bills that may have been avoided were it not for obesity.
This needs to stop in my life and in yours.
We cannot ignore that “self-control” is one of the fruits of the spirit listed in Galatians 5:22 any longer. We have to accept the fact that our lack of energy and endurance is direct result of Satan’s plan to “kill and destroy” that life that Christ came for us to “have it to the full” (John 10:10). I laughed when a famous and very overweight preacher once joked that the Bible tells us to “buffet” (NASB) our bodies instead of the correct pronunciation of buff-ET or the correct translation in 1 Corinthians 9:27 that “I beat my body and make is my slave.”
So, here is a fun and grand solution. Instead of giving overweight men with health issues a blue placard and cart blanche to park closer than others, maybe we should get a red placard that forces us to park in the farthest parking spot available so we have to walk. Or, I guess we can begin a regiment of eating right, exercise and an absolute refusal to live the sedentary American lifestyle. Is your weight hindering you from God’s fullness? Does your life lack discipline when it comes to food?
If so I recommend that you and I take a health class, receive prayer, join a gym, schedule and exercise regime or simply get some help for your sin. Do something with your fat so you can enjoy the life God has for you. Remember, “nothing tastes as good as looking good feels.”
