“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who
sent me and to finish his work.” John 4:34
During the summer of
my junior year of high school our basketball team traveled to a tournament in
Big Bear, California. Going into our
last game we were yet to win a game. In
a futile attempt to inspire us our coach did something unheard of, he did not
allow us to eat breakfast.
“I want you to be
hungry.”
We lost badly that day
but I will never forget his words. How could hunger inspire a bunch of high
school guys towards victory?
Hunger is a primary
need of man. A starving man will do
whatever it takes to survive. Primary
needs such as hunger, thirst, sleep and air will rule a man’s every thought
should he be deprived of them.
The world offers many
things to whet the appetite of a man. The
goal of every man, however should be to “hunger and thirst for righteousness” (Matthew
5:6).
Jesus hungered to
finish what His Father had assigned to him,
“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (John 4:34). He hungered for the
pain of the cross. He was obsessed with
dying for our sins because the Father’s will was his primary need.
Follow in the steps
of Jesus man of God. Hunger to finish the menu of God’s for your life. What has God called you too? Pursue that like a man starving for his next meal.
